Two inseparable high school best friends spend their last weeks before college trying to buy alcohol for a party, hoping to finally impress the girls they have been too scared to talk to all year. Why It's a Classic
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the first draft of this script when they were 13 years old, and that adolescent authenticity is baked into every scene, making the dialogue feel like actual teenage conversation rather than a screenwriter's approximation. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera have such natural chemistry that their friendship anchors the entire film, selling the emotional climax in a way that most R-rated comedies never even attempt. The McLovin subplot with the two cops became an instant cultural phenomenon, generating a fake ID reference that will likely outlive the film itself. It sits alongside American Graffiti and Dazed and Confused in the canon of last-night-of-youth comedies.
Fun Fact
The real Seth and Evan named the two lead characters after themselves, and many of the film's most outrageous stories are drawn from their actual high school experiences in Vancouver. Christopher Mintz-Plasse's audition for McLovin was his first acting audition ever, and his mother had to be on set for the love scene because he was only 17 during filming.
Parent Note
The film earns its R rating with pervasive crude sexual humor, strong language throughout, underage drinking as a central plot point, and a brief scene involving sexual content. The humor is explicitly teenage and male. Despite the raunchiness, the emotional core about friendship is sincere and moving, and most older teens will relate to its anxieties about growing up.
