Pulp Fiction (1994)
About This Movie
Interlocking stories of hitmen, a boxer, a gangster's wife, and a pair of small time robbers collide and overlap in a Los Angeles underworld where pop culture references flow as freely as violence. Quentin Tarantino shattered linear storytelling, reassembled it in a new order, and made audiences feel like they were in on the coolest joke in cinema. The dialogue is so quotable that entire conversations consist of nothing but Pulp Fiction lines.
Why It's a Classic
Tarantino's screenplay, co-written with Roger Avary, proved that structure could be as thrilling as content; the film's out of order timeline turns a conventional crime anthology into a puzzle that rewards multiple viewings. Samuel L. Jackson's Jules Winnfield, quoting Ezekiel before executing people, became an instant icon and one of the defining performances of the 1990s. John Travolta's comeback as the heroin using, twist dancing Vincent Vega revitalized a career that had been dormant for over a decade. The adrenaline injection scene, the Gimp, and the 'Royale with Cheese' conversation each demonstrate Tarantino's ability to generate tension, shock, and humor from the same material. The film made independent cinema commercially viable and influenced an entire generation of filmmakers, for better and worse.
Fun Fact
The briefcase's contents are never revealed, and the golden glow was achieved by placing a light bulb inside. Tarantino has refused to confirm what is in it, though fan theories range from Marsellus Wallace's soul to diamonds from Reservoir Dogs. The role of Vincent Vega was originally offered to Michael Madsen, who turned it down. Uma Thurman initially turned down the role of Mia Wallace until Tarantino called her and read the script to her over the phone. The Jack Rabbit Slim's restaurant set was built specifically for the film and dismantled after production.
Parent Note
The film contains graphic violence, drug use (including a heroin overdose scene), strong language throughout, sexual violence references, and one scene of sadomasochistic imprisonment. The violence is sometimes played for dark comedy, which can be unsettling. Rated R. The nonlinear structure requires active attention. This is a film that rewards maturity and a willingness to engage with morally ambiguous characters.
