Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

About This Movie

A mysterious stranger with a harmonica, a beautiful widow, and a ruthless killer collide in the dying days of the American frontier, where the railroad is swallowing the wilderness whole. Sergio Leone stretches every moment to its breaking point, holding shots so long that the silence becomes deafening. The opening twenty minutes contain almost no dialogue and remain cinema's greatest exercise in pure suspense.

Why It's a Classic

Leone considered this his masterpiece, and many critics agree. The film operates at a pace that is deliberately opposed to Hollywood convention, trusting close-ups of weathered faces and Ennio Morricone's haunting harmonica theme to carry entire scenes without words. Henry Fonda's casting as the villain was a stroke of genius: audiences who associated him with noble, principled roles were genuinely shocked to see those blue eyes commit a child murder in the opening act. Charles Bronson brings a coiled stillness to the harmonica player that suggests decades of patient rage compressed into a single purpose. The film is ultimately a meditation on the end of the mythic West, as the railroad literally paves over the landscape that made these larger than life characters possible.

Fun Fact

The famous opening scene at the train station, featuring three gunmen waiting in almost complete silence for over twelve minutes, was shot over several days. Leone originally wanted Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly to play the three waiting gunmen, creating a symbolic passing of the torch. The harmonica theme was composed by Morricone before filming began, and Bronson reportedly listened to it on set between takes to stay in character.

Parent Note

There is gun violence throughout, including a disturbing scene where a child is murdered. The film's deliberate, meditative pace may challenge viewers accustomed to faster editing. The nearly three hour runtime requires patience and attention. The moral landscape is bleak, with most characters operating from self-interest, though a clear sense of justice does emerge.
